La Lola Churreria At Shops At Serendra In Bgc
LA Lola Churreria is a relatively new chain of shops serving the classic Mexican dessert snack, the Churro, which is a fried stick of dough dipped in cinnamon or various frostings.
We visited their location at the Shops at Serendra, in Bonifacio Global City (BGC):
There's another LA Lola location down at Mall of Asia in Pasay.
We ordered a Medium Dark and White (275p), which is a half dozen churros, three of which are coated in dark chocolate, and the other three coated in a white frosting:
I also grabbed a bottle of Cocio Classic chocolate milk (95p).
LA Lola makes the churros fresh on the premises, but to get them while they are still warm, order the "Clasicos" with your choice of chocolate dip, as the frosted kind are kept in a refrigerated display case.

Lorenzo's Way At High Street Central In Bgc
Lorenzo's Way, located at High Street Central, in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), is one of our favorite casual dining establishments, with a friendly staff and a menu of tasty dishes.
There's another Lorenzo's Way location at Greenbelt in Makati, but we prefer the location at High Street Central, since it's closer to some of our other favorite hangouts.
Lorenzo's Way is usually busy, and the interior is tastefully decorated:
We started with strawberry and classic frozen margaritas (150p ea), which were served with complementary chips:
We went with our usual appetizer of Empanaditas, with a zesty filling of spinach and pine nuts (175p):

For our mains, my partner tried her favorite Seafood En Casuela (495p) which contains a variety of seafood in a rich sauce. The large chunks of crab are the highlight of this dish:

For dessert, we tried Claudes Dream (140p), one of the more popular desserts at Lorenzo's Way, a combination of carabao-flavored ice cream layered with bite-sized strips of coconut and topped with pandan-flavored gelatin:
The staff always makes us feel welcome at Lorenzo's Way, and looks after touches such as clearing and wiping down our table before dessert is served.
Our meal totaled 2173p, which included a 10% service charge:

8 Cuts Burger Blends, located at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay, is a casual burger and chicken joint with some unique offerings, that set it apart from a typical fast-food outlet.
We chose the location at MoA for this review, but they also have a location at The Shops at Serendra in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) which offers the same menu:
The patties at 8 Cuts are made from blends of a variety of cuts of beef, so you can choose just the right balance to suit your personal taste. If you prefer something different than the classic House Blend of short rib and rib eye, they also offer a Steak Cut which mixes in sirloin, a Big Game cut with brisket and hanger, and even an Ox Blend blended from three cuts of flank, oxtail and rib eye:
As we sat down, we ordered two of their Lemonade Margarita drinks (165p) to cool off:

For my main, I ordered the Classic Cheeseburger with Sauce No. 4, which is more tangy and spicy than their Sauce No. 3:

They also put a complementary order of Fried Onion Rings on our table, which were lightly dusted with a seasoning that tasted like paprika:
For dessert, we shared the Molten Chocolate Bottoms (135p) which is a very decadent combination of brownies, molten chocolate, and vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped cream, chocolate chips, and caramel syrup:
Our server Joy was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and she checked up on us during our meal.
The total bill of 1,176 pesos included a 96 peso service charge:

Spare Change
In Canada we have one dollar and two dollar coins , along with quarters , dimes and nickels...
That makes for allot of change... so at the end of each day , i empty out my pockets into a jar on my dresser.

First Balikbayan Box - Oh What Fun!
Members experienced in the Philippines will know about balikbayan boxes - and whilst I knew of them I'd never actually been a part of sending one back.
My wife has been slowly collecting items as she sees them on sale and filling a box - which we finally sent off about a month ago.
Yesterday the box arrived and seeing the videos of the family together opening the box was truly a remarkable thing. The joy, laughter and hysterics was like seeing Christmas AND everyone's birthday all arriving at once.
The box contained everything from tins of baked beans to handsaws and hammers, door knobs to jigsaw puzzles - basically anything we saw on sale or at cheap prices was sent back home. It's surprising how expensive some items are in Manila so the thought of sending a litre bottle of shampoo was a big novelty (actually we sent about 10 bottles of shampoo, maybe another 5 of Conditioner and maybe 10 of moisturiser).
Things in the box included tins of coffee and milo, soap, clothes, shoes, "slippers", hats, sugar, self raising flour, toys, books for kids, kitchen utensils (pots, knives, toaster, etc), CHOCOLATE - you name it, it got in there.
The wife's family are doing OK on their own... all of the kids have been educated and are now either nurses, teachers, accountants or OFWs so we send no money but I guess a big box of stuff was enough to create lots of excitement.
One thing that was interesting in my wife's fossicking was an intent to find things cheap here that could be resold through her aunties shop - the thought process being something for AUD$2 here selling for 150 or 200 pesos there was good value - SO BUY 10 OF THEM... hahahaha
Anyway... this has nothing to do with mongering but I guess it's a part of life with a filipina... and is something that brought her much joy (while hunting for bargains AND seeing the videos last night as everyone gathered for "the opening").
Small things can create such joy when average people appreciate it so much.

The Wok Fried Veggies (335p) had a good assortment of veggies in a zesty dark sauce, which we ordered with two cups of Jasmine rice (70p ea):
The highlight of our meal, the Asian Grilled Salmon (445p), was cooked to perfection, moist and tender, with a side of veggies and a cup of dipping sauce:
The staff was quick and attentive, serving our food while it was still hot from the kitchen.
Our total bill of 2,078 pesos included a service charge of 170 pesos:
Open until 2am on Friday, 1am on Saturday, and midnight on Monday to Thursday.

Chelsea Grand Cafe In The Shops At Serendra In Bgc
Chelsea Grand Cafe, located in The Shops at Serendra, in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) is one of our favorite casual dining spots, with a variety of gourmet dishes served in an open and airy room, decorated with a bright and inviting style:
As we sat down and ordered drinks, my partner chose the Passionfruit Margarita (295p), a mix of Cuervo Silver Tequila, Passionfruit purée, and Cointreau, served in a very large glass that had her dizzy before the meal was done.

For my main, I went with the Char-Grilled Norwegian Salmon (595p), served with Salsa Verde, Toasted Pine Nuts, and Glazed Country Vegetables, served on a bed of Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes.
The salmon was grilled to perfection, moist and tender, with the salsa providing a nice kick for extra flavor:
Chelsea is known for their fresh-made desserts, so we couldn't leave without trying one of their house specialties, Oven Baked Warm Brownie "S'Mores" (295p) served warm with Graham Crackers, Walnuts, Mantecado Ice Cream, and smothered with Caramel Syrup. The brownies and marshmallows both had a warm gooey texture, making this dish extra fun to eat:

The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and checked on us several times during our meal, asking if everything was okay.

Cherry Boy No Longer
The following events are real, only the names have been changed to conceal the innocent, ignorant, and stupid. This story is being publicized as either advice or a warning to all newbies in hopes that somewhere someone will learn from my good times or my many mistakes. Enjoy!
It all began in March of '13 when my boss broke his ankle the week before an extended business trip to Angeles City. I was sent in his place and was about as innocent and green as anyone you've ever seen. Personally, I think he just like to imagine how my face would look when curtain parted at my first bar on Fields. He provided me with a burner phone and the contact information of a fellow co-worker (I'll refer to him as "J") and sent me on my way.
I arrived Manila Intl and found a chubby Filipino holding a sign with my name on it. "Donny" quickly got me aboard his green 7 passenger van that had enough mosquitoes buzzing around inside it that I knew I'd contracted malaria before we made it to the third stop light. After 15 minutes in traffic I quickly realized that malaria didn't matter as I was going to die in an automobile accident before we made it out of the city anyway. Luckily, Donny knew his business and I arrived at the Oasis Hotel a few minutes after 1am without any of my fears being realized.
The following morning I met J at breakfast. We got right down to business... for maybe 15 or 20 minutes before all talk turned to what time we were leaving for that night's debauchery and I pummeled him with questions. He was just as tight lipped as my boss but the shit eating grin he wore let me know it was going to be something to remember.
Before we could begin our fun however Donny was going to take us to the job so I could get my bearings a bit and start to understand the game plan that would take place over the next 50 days. After getting back to the hotel, changing clothes and having a quick dinner full of foods that were only ingested to absorb the maximum amount of alcohol, I was ready for anything. Except the trike, didn't see that coming at all. Once again knew I was going to die in the Philippines as the driver, who couldn't have been 14, attempted to break the land speed record heading to Fields Ave. J paid the kid a 100 and we began to push our way past massage girls, men selling cigarettes and erectile dysfunction aids, as well as small dirty children begging for coins. The kids really got to me. I have two of my own so I couldn't help pushing a few pesos into their small hands.
Once we passed the small crowd my eyes drank in the scene. Bright lights from more bars than I could count illuminated the dirty street. Girls walked by in groups of 2 or 3 in tight dresses, whispering and laughing to each other as they walked on. Some gave a knowing smile and a quick wink. While others clutched to their male companion like he was the life ring that kept them from drowning. Then there were the door girls, sexy little minxes trying to get you into their bar. "Sir, Atlantis, happy hour!" "Sir, Lollipop!" It was an amazing sight that I'll never forget.
J had the conn and lead me like a lamb to the slaughter while still wearing that fucking shit eating grin. The first stop was King's Landing. The curtain finally parted and I wish someone would've recorded my face. 20+ sexy little brown sex machines started screaming as soon as we came in. One in front dropped to her knees and showed me exactly what she'd do with my manhood. J had taken a few steps to the side apparently to see my reaction. I realized my mouth was open and snapped it shut while the waitress showed us to a corner table. All the while the girls didn't stop their yelling. Just outside his girl's bar the sexiest door girl I'd seen all night wearing a tight racing suit looking outfit with blonde highlights and a bow in her hair asks us to come in. Emboldened by the booze I tell her, "sure thing gorgeous but only if you'll come with me for a drink!" "Amy" agrees and we take the rickety elevator up to the Grand Pharaoh. I loved the joint. All the girls were smoking hot on two levels for your viewing pleasure. Before long 3 girls come over selling tequila shots. J shouts out that he'll buy one for me. No big deal, it's Jose Cuervo Gold which sucks ass but it's free so what the hell. Damn I was fucking innocent. Amy pulls me down across her lap and pulls my shirt up to my neck.
I froze like a deer in headlights as the reality of what was about to unfold finally set in. These 3 girls look down at my hairy chest and stomach and I can just see them exchanging glances over my shirt as Amy asks which girl will take the shot. All 3 were nice enough but one was a bit older and had a smug look on her face so I chose her to do the deed. She quickly got to work! I wish I could tell you that I took Amy home and had the most fantastic sex romp of my life but I decided not to. A piece of me thought I'd still stay faithful to my wife forever. Not taking her home is still something I regret every time I think back to that night. Especially since I found out that the girl who took the shoot was her older sister. Taking them both would have been something legends are made of!
I found out sometime later from a trusted source that she's an awful lay and they don't do the full bi-sister thing but it's still nice to imagine how it would've went down. Or he's a lying asshole who's enjoying them himself and doesn't want me to double dip. Doesn't really mater though any way you slice it.
Since that night I've been down town more times than I can count and have bar fined plenty. I'm still new to the boards but I think I have a lot to contribute after 11 trips to the PI and a few to Thailand, so I'll post about more of my adventures or misadventures here in the coming months.
